CaGIS President Aileen Buckley and Vice President Alan Mikuni manned the booth, as did ACSM Bulletin Editor Ilse Genovese (see her article about the conference in the June Bulletin). The ESRI Conference provides an ideal venue to promote the agendas of all of the ACSM member organizations, and approximately 150 people submitted applications to join CaGIS! 2007 ICA Conference in Moscow In August, more than 600 cartography and GIS specialists from around the world assembled in Moscow for the 23rd biennial conference of the International Cartographic Association (ICA). Cindy Brewer (Penn State), Chair of the U.S. National Committee, coordinated U.S. involvement in the Moscow meeting. The U.S. group included over 30 participants who gave paper and/or poster presentations. As Chair of the USNC-ICA, Cindy also represented the U.S. at meetings of the ICA General Assembly, the official decision-making body for the ICA. Also, Tim Trainor (U.S. Census Bureau) was elected as the new Vice-President of the ICA. The USNC-ICA is a standing committee of CaGIS. CaGIS Board Meeting The CaGIS Board met in Arlington, VA, on Saturday, September 29. It was decided to a) raise the dues from $140 to $145 per year; b) establish a President-Elect officer position; c) establish a Secretary position (separate from the Treasurer); and d) extend the term of the Director positions from three to four years. These changes require revisions to the CaGIS Bylaws; the revisions are currently being reviewed for submission to the membership for ratification at the spring membership meeting. CaGIS Scholarship Announcement Each year, CaGIS sponsors two scholarships to CaGIS student members recognizing academic achievement and encouraging the continuing education of outstanding cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), and geographic information science (GIScience) students. Scholarships are awarded for research advancing the disciplines of cartography or GIScience rather than research applying GIS or mapping as a technique. Winners are selected based on academic merit. Applications are reviewed by the CaGIS Scholarship Committee, and awards are announced in the spring. Applications must arrive at ACSM/CaGIS Headquarters by December 15, 2007. Information on this and other CaGIS-sponsored awards is available at www.cartogis.org/awards. 35th Annual CaGIS Map Competition CaGIS announces its 35th Annual Map Design Competition for professionals and students in the United States and Canada. The purpose of the competition is to promote interest in map design and recognize significant design advances in cartography. Noted Cartographers judge the entries based on: color, overall design and impression, craftsmanship, and typography. Entries are displayed at a number of national and inter-national functions and then become part of the permanent collection of the U.S. Library of Congress.
